Obituary for Vernon E. Sikkema
VERNON E. SIKKEMA, 86, of Fulton, IL, died Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Harbor Crest Home in Fulton, IL.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, with Pastor Wayne Wiersema of Gateway Faith Fellowship officiating. A visitation will be held from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 30th at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Cremation rites will be accorded. A private family interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton, IL. Memorials to Gateway Faith Fellowship and the Fulton Fire Department have been established.
Vernon was born December 11, 1932 in Fulton, IL, to John and Tena (Balk) Sikkema. He was educated in the Fulton grade schools and was a 1952 graduate of Fulton High School. He attended Highland Community College in Freeport, IL and Blackhawk Community College in Rock Island, IL. He married Audrey R. Dornbush on August 14, 1952 in Fulton. He later married Jill (Buckman) Marr on December 14, 1996 in Clinton, IA. She died May 26, 2010. Vernon was employed for 27 years by the former Clinton Corn Processing Company in Clinton, IA, and then was employed by the City of Fulton for 18 years, retiring in 1998. He was a current member of Gateway Faith Fellowship in Fulton and a former member of First Baptist Church in Clinton, IA, where he participated in the church’s Bible study group and Men’s Fraternity. Vernon enjoyed bowling and caring for his wife, Jill.
Survivors include three daughters, Karen (Dean) Eganhouse of Fulton, IL, Pam (Mike) Michaelsen of Low Moor, IA and Marcia (Jim) Pruett of Fulton, IL; two sons, Dale (Jolene) Sikkema of Fulton, IL and Ray Jeff Sikkema of Fulton, IL; one step son, Benjamin Marr of Thomson, IL; seven grandchildren, Trisha (Kyle) Ostendorf, Heather (Brian) Barten, Michael C. Michaelsen, Matthew (fiancée Emily Cram) Michaelsen, Stephanie (Ryan) Voss, Jennifer (Nathan) Bormann and Eric (Maisie) Sikkema; eleven great grandchildren; four step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jill; three sisters, Margaret Jackson, Betty Hamilton, Evelyn Carle; six brothers, Arthur, George, Alvin, Barney, Eugene and in infancy, Willard Sikkema.
