Our dear mother, Ruth Dorothy Slonneger sadly passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023 at Morrison Resthave Care & Rehabilitation Assisted Living facility at the age of 99. (She would have been 100 years of age on April 27, 2023.)
Ruth was born April 27, 1923 in Troy, New York. She was the daughter of John and Elsie Dorfner. She attended Saint Mary’s grade school and graduated from Saint Mary’s High school in Troy, New York. She married John Lee Slonneger, Sr. in 1945. They moved to Morrison, Illinois in 1950 with the creation of the General Electric Appliance Control Division.
Ruth worked for a time as a secretary at the Morrison Gazette newspaper. She was an active member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Morrison, IL. She always enjoyed participating in the various planned/impromptu family events and all the family holiday gatherings. She was a member of the Morrison Garden Club and the Morrison Country Club. Over the years, Ruth fostered many lasting friendships and was a well-loved member of the Morrison community. She will be greatly missed by her friends and the staff at Resthave.
Ruth is survived by one son, John Lee (Nancy) Slonneger, Jr. of Sterling, IL and two daughters, Carol R. Gregg of Urbana Illinois and Dale F. (David) Smith of Geneseo, IL; grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) Merema of Princeton, IA, Andrew (Beth Jackson) Slonneger of LeClaire, IA, William Slonneger of Davenport, IA, Catie (James) Loomis of Urbana, IL, Emma (Tadin) Brown, of Saco, ME, Heather (Usama Houlila) Gregg of Chicago, IL, and Doug (Erin) Gregg of Chicago, IL, and Jessica (Richard) Hanley of Santa Clara, California as well as several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters, as well as her husband, John Lee Slonneger, Sr.
The family is in the process of arranging a mass to be said in her honor at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by Rev. Slawomir Zimodro. There will be no memorial service. The family has requested no flowers. A graveside service will be held for the family at a later date.
A memorial has been established to Resthave Care & Rehabilitation Center, 408 Maple Ave, Morrison, IL 61270.
