Obituary for Kenneth L. Ven Huizen
KENNETH L. VEN HUIZEN, 78, of Gowrie IA, died Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Gowrie Care Center. Ken was born August 4, 1928, to Roy and Grace (Heun) Ven Huizen, in Fenton, IL. He was educated in the rural Newton and Garden Plain Schools and graduated from Erie High School in 1946. He married Pearl Prins on January 13, 1950. Ken and Pearl farmed in the Garden Plain area for 10 years after marriage. They then moved to Fulton, IL where Ken owned and operated the Fulton Grain Elevator for several years. Ken then worked for John Deere Implement as the parts manager. In 1993 he retired from Cargill as a grain buyer. He served as a member of the Fulton City Council for 9 years, and then as the Mayor of Fulton for 12 years. In 1997 Ken and Pearl moved to Gowrie, IA. Ken was a member of the Newton Zion Reformed Church where he served as a deacon, an elder and a Sunday school teacher. He was a current member of the United Methodist Church in Gowrie. He had served as President of the Northern Illinois Mayors Association and had been on the Board of Trustees at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA. He was a member of the Kiwanis in both Fulton and Gowrie, and was a member of the Gideon"s since 1971. Survivors include his wife Pearl; one daughter, Colleen (Mrs. Ned) Palmer of Gowrie, IA; one son, Kenneth (Karla) Ven Huizen Jr. of Sheldon, IA; four grandchildren, Jacob, and Libby Ven Huizen, Jill Palmer and fianc"e Lee White, Scott Palmer; two brothers, Allen (Carol) Ven Huizen and Vernon (Lonavene) Ven Huizen, both of Fulton, IL; two sisters, Marilyn (Mrs. Robert) Williams and Sheryl (Mrs. Ron) Buikema " both of Fulton, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
