Obituary for John J. Gentz
JOHN J. GENTZ, 86, of 205 S. Clinton Street in Morrison, IL, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Four Seasons Living Center in Morrison, IL. John was born on March 5, 1923 in Brimfield, IL to Herman and Minnie (Sardison) Gentz. He was educated in the Prophetstown grade school and attended Prophetstown High School. He married Esta I. Renkes in December of 1945. He later married Phyllis (Rick) Olson on January 7, 1978 in Morrison, IL. She preceded him in death on May 31, 1996. John served in the U.S. Marine Corp, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following his military service, John engaged in farming in the Lyndon area for several years. He then operated a feed business for 9 years in several different locations and co-owned and operated the former Ice Box Restaurant in Morrison for 9 years. Most recently he operated the concessions at Morrison Rockwood State Park for 7 years. John was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church, the American Legion " Morrison Post #328 and VFW Post #8281. He enjoyed flower gardening and raising hibiscus as well as fishing and animals. Memorials have been established to Hospice of the Rock River Valley and Morrison United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Sheri Radenslaben of Morrison, IL and Candy (Rick) Alford of Brimfield, IL; one son, Jon Gentz of Morrison, IL; five grandchildren, Tammy (Scott) Bell, Tina (Robert) Stratton, Rick Alford, Michael Alford, and David (Dawn) Alford; ten great grandchildren, Dylan, Sabrina and Ethan Pothof, BobbyJohn & Austin Stratton, Ava, Alivia and Michael Alford, Avery & Carter Alford; one sister, Bernice Brown of Topeka, KS; one brother, Clarence Gentz of Rockford, IL; many nieces and nephews and his dog, Little Bit. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; one grandson, Derek Radenslaben; three sisters, Bernadine Murphy, Irma Kirlin, Minita Oppendike and four brothers, Fred, Ray, Herman and Wilbert Gentz.
