Obituary for Henry L. Smith
HENRY L. SMITH, 81, of 1314 4th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton, IL. Henry was born June 24, 1928 in Morrison, IL, to John P. and Jennie (Stuart) Smith. He was educated in the Frog Pond Grade School of rural Whiteside County. Henry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Katherine J. Wiersema on June 26, 1959 in Fulton. Henry was first employed as a diesel mechanic for Merema Brothers, Inc. in Fulton, IL. He then was engaged in farming in the Ustick Township area and also was a Wyffels Hybrids seed corn dealer for 27 years. He greatly enjoyed driving a combine and doing custom combine work. Henry was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, where he served as deacon and youth leader. He was a member of the American Legion Fulton Post #402. He served as a volunteer for Friends of the Windmill and for the Whiteside County Beef producers at the Whiteside County Fair. Henry was a member of the Fulton Country Club and enjoyed golfing, gardening, and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. His true passion was farming. Survivors include his wife, Katherine; two daughters, Nancy (Robert) Watters of Roscoe, IL and Brenda (Mark) Griebel of Fulton, IL; one son, Randall Smith of Greenfield, IN; six grandchildren, Ryan, Katelyn, and Matthew Watters; Nicholas, Allison and Morgan Griebel; and one sister, Marjorie Balk of Rice Lake, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jeannette Letcher and Katherine Balk; two brothers, John Smith and Leroy Smith.
