Obituary for Florence Bell Murphy
FLORENCE BELL MURPHY, 90, of Resthave Nursing Home, Morrison, IL, died Sunday, December 27, 2009 at the nursing home.Florence was born August 3, 1919 in New Salem, IL to Charles Arthur and Grace Maude (Moore) Bell. She graduated from New Salem High School, an excellent student, and was awarded the State of Illinois Normal School Scholarship, but because of the Depression, she was unable to fulfill her dream of a college education. She married Charles Edward "Chuck" Murphy on December 8, 1940 in New Salem, IL. He died January 2, 2002 after 61 years of marriage. Florence worked over 25 years at the former Morrison Telephone Company, which later became Mid-Continent Telephone and then Alltel, starting as a switchboard operator and then a customer service representative for many years. She was a lifelong Methodist and a member of the United Methodist Church since moving to Morrison in 1957, and was active in the churchs Miriam Circle. Prior to moving to Morrison, Florence was a member of the Toastmistress Association, giving presentations at various groups in the Macon, Missouri area. In Morrison, she was a member of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron, a member of WaTanYe, Illinois Home Extension, and a Depression Glass Club, and enjoyed playing bridge for many years. She was an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress, and her sense of style and creativity showed in all of her accomplishments. Survivors include three daughters, Suzanne (Tom) Auman of Coal Valley, IL; Melinda Rexford of Alton, IL; and Rebecca (Craig) Brady of Morrison, IL; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Pasquini, Erin (Lonnie) Wenzel, Stephanie (Jason) Miles, Katie (Jay) Murray, Michael Auman; five great grandchildren, David & Milo Pasquini; Aylish Miles; Cedar Murray; Lance Wenzel; two sisters, Doris Bell of Griggsville, IL and Mary Wilcoxson of Springfield, IL; many nieces and nephews and dear friends.She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; two brothers, Charles W. Bell and Ray Bell.
