Obituary for Eleanor M. Medema
ELEANOR M. MEDEMA, 89, of Fulton, IL, died Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, IA.Eleanor was born August 8, 1928, in Cordova, IL, to Maurice W. and Madge M. (Hoobler) Sullivan. She was educated in the rural Cordova Grade Schools and was a 1946 graduate of Fulton High School. She received her BA from Marycrest College in Davenport, IA. Eleanor married Jacob Medema, Jr. on December 27, 1948, in Clinton, IA. She taught for 5 years in the rural Whiteside County Schools and for 25 years in the Fulton/River Bend School District. She also farmed alongside her husband for 20 years in the rural Ustick Township area. Eleanor worshipped most recently with the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fulton. She was a member and advocate of the National Education Association, and a past member of the Fulton Community Fund Board. She was also an English teacher for 30 years and was a recipient of numerous Teacher of the Year awards in conjunction with Illinois Young Authors. Other than her family, she loved flowers, horses, movies and especially nature.Survivors include her husband, Jacob Jr.; two sons, Steven Medema of Bettendorf, IA and Jeffrey Medema of Streator, IL; six grandchildren, Ty (Katie) Medema, Mark (Shelsey) Medema, Zac (Maggie) Medema, Arianna Medema, Nick (Ashley) Medema and Jacob Medema; six great grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen Banse and her twin, Ethel Jacobs; her daughter-in-law, Paula Medema.
