Obituary for Bert S. Merema
BERT S. MEREMA, 95, of Fulton, IL, passed away July 1, 2016 at Mercy Living Center South, Clinton, IA. Bert was born April 24, 1921, in Fulton, IL, the son of Samuel L. and Grace A. (Smith) Merema. He attended grade school at the Tehan and Lockhart grade schools of rural Whiteside County. Bert married Marian J. Temple on April 6, 1945, at the Newton Reformed Church parsonage. Early in his working career, Bert was employed at Earl Hill"s Garage in Albany, hauled milk for Earl Lutz and drove truck for Howard Wierenga. He also worked at Climax Engines and Auto Parts in Clinton. Beginning in December 1951, he was a founding partner in business, with his brother, Martin, at Merema Bros. on Main Street in Fulton and later was joined by his three sons. Bert was a lifetime member of Antique Engine and Tractor Association and Crosley Auto Club. He enjoyed restoring antique cars and tractors. Bert is survived by one daughter, Viola M. (Ralph) Pray of Fulton; three sons, Robert L. (Leslie) Merema, Stanley M. (Kathy) Merema, and Roger S. (Terri) Merema all of Fulton; four grandsons, Rob Merema, Shaun (Kori) Merema, Ryan Merema (fianc"e Jenn Clydesdale), and Corey (Cariann) Merema; nine great-grandchildren, Abbi and Logan Merema, Hunter, Isabel, and Anabel Merema, Rhett and Baylee Merema, and Brayden and Dylan Merema, six step great-grandchildren, Krysta (Josh) Theobald, Vincent Sepulveda, Zayne Cole, Lizz (Keeton) Ritter, Skyler Norman, and Grant Clydesdale; one sister, Ramona (Harold G.) Renkes of Fulton; and one brother, Martin H. Merema of Fulton; and a good friend and neighbor, Kenny Springer. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marian on October 2, 2009.
