Obituary for William E. Bill Barber
WILLIAM E. "BILL" BARBER, 90, of 15936 Ebson Road, Fulton, IL, died Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Morrison, IL. Bill was born on November 22, 1921, in Clinton, IA, to Lawrence H. and Mary A. (Entwistle) Barber. He was educated in the Irving Grade School in Clinton, and was a 1939 graduate of Clinton High School. He graduated from the University of Akron in 1952, with a civil engineering degree. He married Marilyn June Bloor in 1946, and later married Harriet(Hicks)Wilson on December 21, 1954. She died February 2, 2004. Bill served with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers as a Technician 4th Grade during WWII " from 1943 to 1946. He was in Germany on VE Day, and was in the Philippines on VJ Day. He was first employed as a construction engineer in the Panama Canal Zone, and later became an admeasurer at the canal. He returned to the Clinton area in 1954 and began a six year stint with Modjeski and Masters, building the Highway 30 Bridge and the second span of the Bettendorf Bridge. He later joined the Army Corps of Engineers at Rock Island Arsenal as Chief of the Estimating Section, retiring in 1982, after 24 years of service. Bill was a member of the Clinton Church of Christ in Clinton, IA, the Clinton Am Vets, the Fulton American Legion Post #402, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Clinton Arie #705. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles, reading, carpentry and wood working. He constructed his current home, which is located on the Mississippi River. Bill was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Survivors include one son, Philip (Lynn) Barber of Akron, OH; two step sons, Mike (Vicki) Wilson of Bettendorf, IA, Tom (Robbie) Wilson of Albany, IL; two grandchildren, Andrew and Michael Barber; five step grandchildren, Sheri, Scott, Sean and Michael Wilson, Jennifer McCunn; one step great granddaughter, Maryssa McCunn; special friend, Helen Cotton of Clinton, IA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet; three sisters, Agnes Hull, Bessie Kennedy, and Norma Melvin; two brothers, Washington and John Barber.

GRAVESIDE SERVICES AND MILITARY FUNERAL HONORS: 11:00 AM Friday " December 23, 2011 at the Rock Island National Cemetery " Rock Island, IL. Family and friends wishing to attend the graveside service may meet at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Radisson Hotel on John Deere Commons in Moline, IL, to go in procession to the National Cemetery.
