Obituary for Thelma A. Wierenga
THELMA A. WIERENGA 89, of Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton, IL, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 at the nursing home. Thelma was born May 22, 1918 in Morrison, IL to John D. and Lena (Buis) Dykstra. She was educated in the Morrison grade schools and attended Morrison High School. She married Harold H. Wierenga on September 20, 1940 in Morrison. He died January 20, 1999. Thelma was a homemaker. In 1967 she and her husband bought an abandoned quarry in Fulton, where they built their home and created the Heritage Canyon on the property. Together they built, maintained and operated it as a local tourist attraction for 35 years. She was a lifetime member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton, and was involved in many church ministries. Survivors include one daughter, Linda (Mrs. Gary) Balk of Fulton, IL; one son, Donald H. (Diane) Wierenga of Farmington, NM; eight grandchildren, Glinda (Felipe) Gonzalez, James (Becky) Balk, Patrick (Jenny) Balk, Kristi (Lee) West, Heather (Jason) Reid, Dawn (Mark) Gould, Dea (Joey) Evans, Donnelle (Bo) Hand; twenty great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Vandermyde of Fulton, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; one son, David Wierenga.
