Obituary for Shirley McKenna
SHIRLEY M. MCKENNA, 91, of Sterling, IL, formerly of Prophetstown, IL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling.

A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 20, 2018, at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Prophetstown with Rev. Father Antoni J. Kretowicz officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, January 19, 2018, at the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Rock River Hospice and Home, St. Catherine Catholic Church, or Prophetstown Park District.

Shirley was born October 28, 1926, in Garrison, ND, to Francis E. and Ruth M. (Fitzgerald) Schehl. She was a 1944 graduate of Prophetstown High School and a 1948 graduate of the Moline Public Hospital School of Nursing in Moline, IL. Shirley married Robert R. McKenna on August 11, 1949, her mother’s birthday, in Prophetstown. He died June 20, 1997. Shirley was employed as a registered nurse for 42 years. The majority of her career was with the Sterling/Rock Falls Clinic in the Pediatrics Department. Shirley was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Prophetstown and the church’s Altar and Rosary Society. She served as an election judge and as a Prophetstown Park District Board member. Shirley also was a founding member of the Prophetstown Red Hat Society.

Shirley fully enjoyed life, particularly traveling, attending musical theater productions, and visiting with family and friends. Shirley looked forward to all the birthday and other celebrations with her sisters and brothers. Get togethers with her co-workers and nursing school classmates were also very important. Most precious to her was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Through the years she spent many hours attending concerts, recitals, graduations and award ceremonies and many sporting events. Of course, she documented these with photos and the numerous photo albums she carefully organized are treasured.

Surviving Shirley are her three daughters, Lynette (“Lynne”) (Lee) Frazier of Ft. Wayne, IN; Pamela (Jeff) Patzke of Neenah, WI; and Maureen (John) Tschosik of Batavia, IL; two sons, Kevin (Debra) McKenna of Normal, IL and Patrick (Jill) McKenna of Freeport, IL; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn (Bernard) Null of Erie, IL and Eileen Detra of Prophetstown, IL; two brothers, William “Bill” (Judy) Schehl of Geneseo, IL and Dennis (Maureen) Schehl of Sykesville, MD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; one sister, Marge Sommers and one brother, Richard Schehl.
