Obituary for Shirley A. Hughes
SHIRLEY A. HUGHES, 79, of Morrison, IL died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Four Seasons Living Center in Morrison.A beautiful soul departed from us on April 21, 2012, at Four Seasons Living Center in Morrison. Shirley Ann Hughes began her earthly journey on January 16, 1933 when she was born to Charles R. and Ruth (Typer) Cox in Polo, IL. She was united in marriage to Galen N. Hughes on October 14, 1956 at the Polo Methodist Church. Shirley worked at Watt Publishing Co. in Mt. Morris from 1951 until 1956 when she married Galen. They moved to Morrison where she worked for the Principals of Morrison High School district 307 beginning December 10, 1956 until the Morrison schools formed a United District on July 1, 1974. Her office was always located at the High School even when she worked for the District Superintendent. All told, she worked 46 years for 14 Morrison school administrators, retiring as administrative secretary on June 30, 2003. She loved her association with the students and said there was something good to be said for each one of the thousands she met.A loving daughter, wife, sister, aunt and friend, she was kind and non-judgmental. She was her family"s historian. She enjoyed decorating her home, writing letters of comfort or congratulations where needed, corresponding with family, friends and former classmates via the internet, and was a talented watercolor artist. She loved Morrison and seemed to know everyone; remembering their names and something interesting about them, and their families. She was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church for all the years she lived there. She is survived by her brother, Don (Joyce) Cox of Mt. Morris, her sister, Irene Klingel of Springfield, and five nieces and three nephews who she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband Galen in 1994, her father in 1964, her mother in 2001, and two brothers, Stanley Cox in 1965 and Richard Adams in 1996.
