Obituary for Ruth Sykes
RUTH SYKES, 73, of 22765 Missionary Point Drive. Cable, WI, formerly of Morrison, IL, died Thursday, June 29, 2006 in her home. Ruth was born March 20, 1933 in Morrison, IL to Cornelius and Ruvine (Brackemeyer) Akker. She was educated in the Morrison schools and graduated from Morrison High School. She married William D. "Bill" Sykes on February 28, 1952 in Morrison. He died September 12, 1995. Following her marriage, Ruth lived in Morrison. In 1962 she and her husband purchased the Mogasheen Resort in Cable, WI, and spent summers running the resort. In 1972 they became permanent residents of Cable to operate the resort year round. In 1995 they turned over the operation of the resort to her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Henry Rieckhoff. She was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Cable, WI and was involved in a variety of church activities. She had been on misson trips to China and Alabama, and for the past 10 years she wrote encouraging letters to prison inmates for the Source of Light Ministries in Georgia. She had many hobbies, including fishing, numerous outdoor activites, line dancing, reading, playing cards and board games, and cooking. She was active in the Cable Homemakers, the Red Hatters, the Namakagon Lake Assoc. and the Namakagon Community Club. Survivors include two daughters, Charla (Michael) Olson of Morrison, IL and Patsy (Henry) Rieckhoff of Cable, WI; three sons, Terry (Julie) Sykes of DeSoto, WI, Ronald (Lola) Sykes of Mounds View, MN and Phillip (Carrie) Sykes of Dubuque, IA; eleven grandchildren, Joshua (Mandy) Olson, Amanda (Dan) Cook; John, Geni and Susan Rieckhoff; Tara (Luke) Jambois, Skipper, Caleb, Zahna, Lara and Sam Sykes; two great grandchildren, Jake and Micah Olson; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Williams of Glendale, CA; two brothers Wayne (Marilyn) Akker of Morrison, IL and Lee (Carolyn) Akker of Ellensburg, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; two sisters, Thelma Rick and Alice Bolluyt; two brothers, Dale Akker and one in infancy.
