Ruth Esther Hovey was born in Cedar Rapids, IA on May 7, 1928, a daughter of Culver and Jessie (Ellsworth) Hovey. In addition to her parents, her family included nine siblings. On January 15, 1947 she married Clarence “Bud” Baker in Morrison. They shared 54 years together before his death on February 19, 2001. Ruth was fiercely independent and relished her role as family matriarch. She enjoyed spending time in the kitchen baking, with cookies and pies being her specialties. Her caramel corn was just the right combination of crunchy yet tender. Her homemade 14 Day Pickles were time and labor intensive and an extra special treat. In earlier years she contributed both items to help raise funds at the annual church rummage sale. She had the amazing ability to provide a generous and delicious meal to all family and guests, even those who dropped in unexpectedly. Ruth took pride in her home, keeping it neat and orderly, and liked to decorate it for every holiday. In addition, she worked at General Electric in Morrison, IL, retiring after 18 years of service.
Those left to honor her memory are daughters, Linda (Al Jolley) Baker and Marjorie (Wayne) Letcher; grandchildren, Christina Neely, Teresa (Shawn Meredith) Baker, Paul (Jennifer) Letcher and Amy (Michael) Kelley; great grandchildren, Ethan, Olivia, Avery, Donovan, Eden and Simon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, and a great grandson, Callan.
The members of Ruth’s family would like to thank the caregivers at The Alverno and Mercy Hospice for their compassionate care.
