Obituary for Ralph I. Matthews
RALPH I. MATTHEWS, 83, of 611 E. 3rd Street, Prophetstown, IL, died Tuesday Aug. 11, 2009 at OSF St. Anthony"s Medical Center in Rockford, IL. Ralph was born April 2, 1926, in Prophetstown, IL, to Howard and Martha (Winkler) Matthews. He graduated from Prophetstown High School and then attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Ralph served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Doris Sandrock on December 6, 1950 in Yorktown, IL. She died April 27, 1957. He later married Arlene Plautz on June 3, 1961 in Rock Falls, IL. She died on June 10, 1997. Ralph farmed in the Prophetstown area until his retirement in 1995. While farming he was an active Pioneer seed corn dealer. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church where he was active in the choir. He was a member of the Prophetstown Masonic Lodge #293 AF & AM, the Prophetstown Lions Club, and the Sterling-Rock Barbershop Chorus. He was a member of the Whiteside County Royal Youth and was active in Volunteers for Education at the Prophetstown Elementary School. Survivors include one son: David (Cathy) Matthews of Prophetstown, IL; three daughters: Theresa (Paul) Kohs of Westchester, IL, Debra (Ken) Jackson of Overland Park, KS, and Dawn (Robert) Adams of Geneseo, IL; ten grandchildren, Greg, Karen and Scott Matthews; Ryan Kohs; Heather, Brianna and Michaela Jackson; Nicole, Kelcey and Hannah Adams. He was preceded in death by both wives, Doris and Arlene; two brothers, Glenn and George Matthews.
