Obituary for Merle R. Strike
MERLE R. STRIKE, 88, of Prophetstown, IL, died Friday, November 23, 2018 at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center in Prophetstown.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 3, 2018 at First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown, preceded by a visitation from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Rev. Susan Davenport, Interim Pastor of First Lutheran Church will officiate. The Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.
Merle was born March 8, 1930 in Tampico, IL, to Fred and Irene (Sandrock) Strike. He was educated in the Tampico grade schools and graduated from Tampico High School in 1948. He married Shirley M. Elliott on June 2, 1951 in Sterling, IL. She passed away on February 22, 2002. Merle served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After graduating from high school Merle worked as an electrician for Scott’s Electric. He started his own business, Strikes Electric, in 1962, working there until his retirement. He also enjoyed farming. Merle was a member of First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown. He enjoyed playing cards, reading the newspaper and anything to do with cars and trucks. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. A memorial to First Lutheran Church of Prophetstown has been established.
Survivors include three sons, Terry (Julie) Strike of Prophetstown, Bruce (Leslie) Strike of Monticello, IL and David (Pam) Strike of Prophetstown; ten grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one sister, Nyla (Jim) Schmadeke of Ankeny, IA; four brothers, Eugene (Lillian) Strike of Sterling, IL, Arlyn (Biruta) Strike – DeKalb, IL, Theron Strike of Springfield, IL and Norman Strike of Takoma Park, MD.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Shirley.
