Obituary for Maynard R. Venema
MAYNARD R. VENEMA, 68, of Hammett House, Sterling, IL, formerly of Fulton, IL, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Hammett House. Maynard was born December 31, 1940 in Clinton, IA, to John and Annaline (Sterenberg) Venema. He was educated in the Fulton grade schools. Maynard was employed at Legel"s Gas Station in downtown Fulton, IL and later at Hank"s Grocery and Fish Market on Route 84 in Fulton. Since January 13, 1982, he worked as a client of Self Help Enterprises in Sterling, IL. Maynard was a former member of the First Reformed Church in Fulton, where he attended Sunday School. He was a current member of the 16th Avenue Church of Christ in Sterling. Maynard was an active participant in the Special Olympics throughout his time as a client of Self Help Enterprises and had received many ribbons and medals. He was also a member of the Self Help 4-H Club and entered many of his projects in the Whiteside County Fair. He was known for always being very helpful to the other clients in the work shop at Self Help Enterprises and at the Hammett House, where he resided. Survivors include two sisters, Lillian Reynolds of Fulton, IL and Marilyn (Larry) Fulfs of Winslow, IL; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, Leonard R. Venema.
