Obituary for Mae Van Kampen
MAE VAN KAMPEN, 76, of 409 9th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Monday, February 12, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, IA. Mae was born May 21, 1930 in Thomson, IL, to John D. and Helen (Engelkens) Balk. She was educated in the Chadwick, IL grade and high schools. She married Harold E. "Harry" Van Kampen on February 16, 1950 in Fulton. He died July 3, 2000. Mae owned and operated, with her late husband, Van"s Standard Station in Clinton. She also was employed by General Electric in Morrison for several years. Most recently, she owned and operated, Van"s Caf" in Fulton, retiring in 1993. She also had owned and operated Savanna Roller Rink. Mae helped to raise 110 foster children while serving as a foster parent. She was well known for playing the accordion while her husband played guitar for various functions. She also was an accomplished organist. She was a member of First Reformed Church in Fulton. Survivors include one daughter, Carmen Melissa Mae Van Kampen of Fulton; two grandchildren, Samantha Jo Zuidema and Jesse Eugene Zuidema. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harry; three brothers, Henry Newendyke, Robert and Harold Balk.
