Obituary for Lois Jean Sikkema
LOIS JEAN SIKKEMA, 90, of Erie, IL, died Monday, April 25, 2022, at River Crossing of Moline in Moline, IL.
Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home in Fulton, IL, with Rev. John Byker, retired pastor, officiating. The visitation will precede the service starting at 11:00 AM until the start of the funeral. Interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Unity Christian School in Fulton, IL.
Lois was born January 18, 1932, in Garden Plain Township, IL, to Louis B. and Helene (DeWeert) Oostenryk. She was educated in rural Whiteside County grade school and was a graduate of Mt. St. Claire High School. She married Willis E. Sikkema on June 15, 1951, in Garden Plain, IL. Lois was a homemaker for many years and raised her family. Over the years, she fostered over 20 foster children. She worked as a cook at Friday’s in Clinton, IA, and also worked as a cook in dietary at Harbor Crest Nursing Home for 14 years. She was one of the original members of Bethel Reformed Church and was on the Handicap Awareness Board. Lois was the first successful cochlear implant in the 1980’s. She became a spokeswoman for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, traveling all over to talk about her experiences. She also worked with the hospital to obtain donations for grant and research programs.
Survivors include her husband, Willis; one daughter, Christine (Dale) Nichols of Clinton, IA; two sons, Paul Sikkema and Andy (Shelle) Sikkema both of Clinton, IA; nine grandchildren, Billy (Tracy), Richard (Amanda), Rebekah, and Rose Ebensberger, Sarah (Eric) Peterson, Rebekah Wheatley, Sarah Abolt, Anna Murphey and Jacob Abolt; sixteen great-grandchildren; eleven great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry (Pat) Oostenryk of Albany, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one granddaughter, Stacia Sikkema in infancy.
