Obituary for Lena P. Meurs
LENA P. MEURS, 93, of Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton, IL, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, at the nursing home. Lena was born December 24, 1918, in Ocheyedan, IA, to Henry and Tietje (Westra) Post. She was educated in the Ocheyedan, IA schools. On January 18, 1939, she married Edward Meurs, in Ocheyedan. He died February 7, 2008. Lena was first employed by ICA in Morrison, IL, and then General Electric Co. in Morrison, working there for 31 years, until retiring in 1981. She was a former member of the Morrison Christian Reformed Church and the First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton. She was a charter member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, and the church"s Mary & Martha Society. She also taught Sunday school for several years. Lena was a current member of the Second Reformed Church in Fulton, and the church"s Coffee Break. She participated in the coupon program of Unity Christian School, volunteered in Fulton"s Love, Inc., and also Day Star in Dade City, FL, and taught English to Spanish speaking immigrants. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and flower gardening. She helped care for the Fulton dike flower beds. Survivors include three daughters, Nancy (Ron) Shear, Lois (Ron) Vogel and Betty (Harlan) Wiebenga, all of Fulton; one son, E. Wayne (Carol) Meurs of Fulton; twelve grandchildren, David (Patricia) Shear, Betsy (Richard) Tubbs, Melinda (James) Wyatt, Duane Wierenga, Daniel (Laurie) Wierenga, Suzanne (Robert) Wierenga-Keller, G. Scott (Angela) Vogel, Jennifer (Brian) Hamilton, James (Karen) Wiebenga, Charles (Erin) Wiebenga, Nicole (Richard) Carter, Matthew (Carolyn) Meurs; thirty-three great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; one son, Gary Lee Meurs; two grandsons, Greg Alan Meurs in infancy and Rodger Lee Meurs, two sisters, Cornelia Verhoef and Jennie Walburg; three brothers, John, Andrew and Garrett Post.
