Obituary for Lawrence E. Vrchoticky
LAWRENCE E. "LARRY" VRCHOTICKY, 91, of 15539 Henry Road, Morrison, IL, died Saturday, November 18, 2006 at CGH Medical Center , Sterling, IL. Larry was born May 7, 1915 in Iowa City, IA, to Frank and Vernona (Worrell) Vrchoticky. He attended school in Coalville and Fort Dodge, IA. Larry was drafted into the U.S. Army in the fall of 1942. After basic training in Arkansas, he served in the infantry. He was shipped overseas and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was seriously injured and spent 9 months in the hospital. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Oak Leaf Cluster. Larry married Harriet Sissing Smith on November 26, 1958 in Garden Plain, IL. He was supervisor of the security force at beef packing plants in Estherville and Fort Dodge, IA. He attended watchmaker"s school at Bradley University and then opened Larry"s Jewelry Store in Fulton, IL. He later owned several restaurants. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Harriet; one daughter, Mrs. Connie Gretillat of Union, IA; one son, Gary (Georgia) Vrchoticky of Sun City, AZ; one stepdaughter, Sandra (Mrs. Mark) Kuban of Cleveland, OH; one stepson, Richard (Elizabeth) Smith of Albany, IL; six grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Alyce Stanek of Fort Dodge, IA. He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Vinson and one brother, Ralph Vrchoticky.
