Obituary for LaVerta M. Balk
LAVERTA M. BALK, 80, of 1320 4th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Trinity Hospital at Terrace Park in Bettendorf, IA. LaVerta was born May 17, 1927 in Clinton, IA to Henry and Katherine (DeWeerdt) Borgman. She was educated in the Fulton, IL grade schools. She married Leroy J. Balk on April 22, 1948 in Fulton. Prior to marriage, she was employed by Rich"s Toy Factory in Clinton, IA. Following her marriage, she farmed with her husband in Garden Plain Township, where she lived until 2004. LaVerta was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton and the church"s Priscilla Circle. Her ministry was one of service, by baking and cooking for friends and neighbors, who were going through trials. She enjoyed encouraging others through sending cards and notes to family, friends, and neighbors. She also enjoyed baking and cooking for neighbors and those who worked on the farm. LaVerta deeply loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them as well as attending their activities. Survivors include her husband, Leroy; one daughter, Brenda (Danny) Lipes of Bettendorf, IA; one son, Lavern (Sandra) Balk of Milan, IL; six grandchildren, Aaron, Kyle, Adam, and Megan Balk; Jason and Julie Lipes; two sisters, Evelyn (Ray) Damhoff and Donna (Gary) Dykstra both of Fulton, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents.
