Obituary for Larry R. Phelps
LARRY R. PHELPS, 77, of Prophetstown, IL, died Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Hope Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in East Moline, IL.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown, officiated by his brother-in-law, Randy Hedrick. There will be no visitation; the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established by the family.
Larry was born September 25, 1943 in Lyons, KS to Richard C. and Loventrice C. (Hooten) Phelps. He was educated in rural Barton County Kansas grade schools and was a graduate of Hoisington Rural High School in Hoisington, KS. He attended Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, OK and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration. On June 1, 1963 he married Bonnie M. Hedrick in Sterling, IL. Larry served two tours in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a pilot of B52 reconnaissance planes and T37 fighter planes. He was a minister for the Church of the Nazarene for 30 years until he retired. He was an avid golfer, loved cars and reading and cherished spending time with his grandchildren. Larry was an evangelist and great soul winner; he loved people and they loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Bonnie; one daughter, Stephanie Fraze-Phelps of Prophetstown; three grandchildren, Jake Fraze and Joseph Fraze, both of St. Petersburg, FL and Jenna (Brandyn) Zeitler; one great grandchild, Sadie Rose Zeitler; one daughter-in-law, Meichelle Phelps of Prophetstown; two sisters, Kathleen (Blake) Smith of Rio Verde, AZ and Debbie (Chad) Issinghoff of Hutchinson, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rodney Phelps; one brother, James Phelps; a nephew, Kyle Issinghoff.
