Obituary for Kris Walter Sommers
KRIS W. SOMMERS, 52, of Prophetstown, IL, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at his home, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Kris was born October 18, 1957 in Moline, IL to Richard & Margaret (Schehl) Sommers. He graduated from Prophetstown High school. He married Margiline R. Halverson on September 12, 1998 at The Wedding Chapel in Elizabeth, IL. Kris began work at Penberthy, Prophetstown, IL, while still attending high school. He very much enjoyed working for Gordon Francis Farms for several years. He then began his career as a carpenter, eventually co-owning his own business, C & S Construction. He was a member of Prophet Hills Country Club, and St. Catherine Catholic Church, Prophetstown, IL, where he was baptized and confirmed. Kris was a very talented and well respected athlete. He excelled in baseball and softball, earning All-American status playing fast-pitch. He played on many ball teams around the area. He later focused his talents on the game of golf, winning the local Prophet Hills Championship and playing in numerous Rock River Classic, Three Rivers and Panther Cup tournaments. He formed many long-lasting friendships through his love of sports. Kris enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. He especially enjoyed his trips to Hawaii and Arizona with his wife, and attended many of the infamous Fitzgerald Family Reunions held across the country. Since Kris and Margie met and were married later in life, they very much appreciated their precious time together, along with their special dog, Molly. Survivors include his wife, Margie; his parents, Dick & Marge Sommers, of Prophetstown; mother-in-law, Margaret Halverson, of Waukon, IA; three sisters, Kim (Greg) Schmitt, Kate (Tony) Cody, Karyn (Trent) Buck, all of Prophetstown; three brothers, Kurt (Carolyn) Sommers, of San Diego, CA, Kerry (Kathy) Sommers, of Coal Valley,IL, Kraig (Jessie) Sommers, of Freeport, IL; two sisters-in-law, Cindy (Scott) Butikofer, of Cresco, IA, and Mary Jo (Russ) Meyer, of Waukon, IA; two brothers-in-law, Greg Halverson, of North Ogden, UT, Mark Halverson and fianc"e Robin, of Frisco, TX; nieces and nephews, Jon, Kiley, Tessa, Maggie, Brady, Taylor, Allie, Morgan, Marquise, Allisa, Emma, Kory, Kennedy, Ashley, Bryan, Matthew, Tina, Aaron, Bailey and Nathan; great-nieces and -nephews, Mykinzie, Emmalee, Lawson, Aiden, Cole, Kyra, Carver. Kris is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.He was preceded in death by his grandparents; one niece, Nikole Sommers; father-in-law, Harold Halverson; brother-in-law, Eric Halverson; and his beloved black lab, Molly.
