Obituary for Juanita Arnold
Juanita Arnold passed on to the next life on March 4, 2010, at Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Home in Prophetstown, IL, surrounded by her family. Born Juanita Jacqueline Mathis to Allen and Josephine (Clementz) Mathis on July 25, 1915, in Tampico, IL, she moved with her family to Lyndon, IL and from there to Hooppole, IL, where she attended school, finishing her senior year of high school in Geneseo, IL. She then attended the Art Institute of Chicago until called home to care for her ill mother. She taught in Ringel country grade school and Hooppole grade school, and worked as a bookkeeper for the Hooppole, Yorktown and Tampico Railroad. She played the pipe organ at the Hooppole Zion EUB church for many years. On December 6, 1951, she married George Arnold and they farmed near Hooppole. She delighted in raising her children, growing a garden and cooking good food. Her pie crusts were flakey. She liked to draw for special occasions. Her work was lively and often whimsical. She had a love for reading and learning which she never outgrew, enjoying things like philosophy and astronomy until she couldn"t read anymore. She loved all aspects of country life (except maybe plowed dirt blowing in the spring) and had a high regard for the work of caring for the land. She could be stern as a judge, but was always supportive of her family. She was a darn good mother, and her children are grateful for that. She believed in the Creator and that gave her peace. Surviving her are her daughters, Becky (Bruce) Jones, Prophetstown, and Barb (Chris) Reynolds, Colona, IL; son, Phil (Cheryl) Arnold, Prophetstown, 15 grandchildren; one great grandson. Her husband and one infant daughter preceded her in death.
