Obituary for Joyce E. Tollenaar
JOYCE BALK TOLLENAAR, 73, of 1110 " 6th Avenue in Fulton, IL died Friday, September 11, 2009 at her home. Joyce was born on April 8, 1936 in Newton Township, IL to Corneil and Clara (Koenes) Balk. She attended Fulton Christian School in Fulton, IL for her first 8 years. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1954. She then obtained her Bachelor"s Degree in Education from Illinois State University in 1958. She married Norman Tollenaar on December 19, 1959 in Fulton, IL. Joyce taught for 4 years at Fulton Elementary School in Fulton, IL and then 30 years at Horace Mann Elementary School in the Clinton Community School District, retiring in 1999. She and Norman spent their summers in Northern Minnesota following retirement. She wasa member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Clinton, IA where she served on several church boards, taught Sunday School for many years and sang in the church choir. Joyce was active in the PTA, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Friends of the Library, F.U.N. Group, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Lyceum Book Club and she volunteered in the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop. Joyce loved spending time with her friends and family and enjoyed reading, walking, observing birds and wildflowers, scrapbooking and crossword puzzles. A memorial has been established. Survivors include her husband, Norman; one daughter, Cinda (Mrs. Doug) Sanders of Coralville, IA; one son, David (Diane) Tollenaar of Clinton, IA; three granddaughters, Delaney Tollenaar, Sara Sanders and Shea Sanders; one sister, Linda (Mrs. Phillip) Fier of Huntley, IL; and her mother-in-law, Norma Tollenaar of Clinton, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother in infancy.
