Obituary for John Willard Byers
JOHN WILLARD BYERS, 95, of Mercy Living Center North, Clinton, IA, formerly of Fulton, IL, died Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at the Living Center. John was born June 29, 1920, in Clinton, IA, to David and Dorothy (Meder) Byers. He was raised by Joe and Dora Diephuis, whom he considered his parents. John was educated in the Clinton, IA grade schools and attended Clinton High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Virginia Kettler in 1942, in Joplin, MO. Later, on January 1, 1949, he married Evelyn S. Schmidt in Clinton, IA. She died October 5, 2004. John was first employed by the former Curtis Company in Clinton. He then worked for the former Wagner Import Motors in Clinton and most recently, for Fulton Corporation in Fulton, until retiring in 1989. He was a past member of the Clinton Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon. He was also a past member of the Fulton American Legion Post #402, and the Tag-A-Long Trailer Club. John enjoyed camping, the outdoors, cooking and woodworking. Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Donna Diephuis, his caregiver, of Thomson, IL and Eleanor Jackson of Clinton; two nieces, Di (Jerry) Tiesman of Clinton and Marla (Mike) Kozlowski of Phoenix, AZ; one nephew, Mark (Kristine) Diephuis of Savanna, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Dora Diephuis; his wife, Evelyn; one son, Allen Byers; two brothers, Gene Diephuis and one in infancy.
