HOWARD A. VANZUIDEN, 86 of Fulton, IL, died Friday, June 9, 2023 at the University of IA Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
Howard was born June 7, 1937 in Morrison, IL, to William and Fannie (VenHuizen) VanZuiden. He was educated in the Spring Creek School in rural Whiteside County. On February 10, 1956 he married Janice L. Wiebenga at Second Reformed Church in Fulton. In his early years Howard worked as a truck driver. He then farmed on the family farm for many years. Howard owned and operated the Garden Plain Feed Service as well as several other businesses over the years, including the Fulton Super Wash car wash. He was a charter member of the Fulton Country Club and a life-long member of CrossView Church (formerly Second Reformed Church) in Fulton, where he served as a deacon. Howard served as an alderman in Fulton for many years, and also was the mayor of Fulton for eight years. In their younger years Howard and his Jan enjoyed traveling to many different countries and states. They loved attending their grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events. In his free time he liked to sing and play his Q Chord keyboard, so much so that he would often go to area nursing home and church events to play. Memorials to CrossView Church and Compasses Hospice have been established.
Survivors include his wife Janice; three daughters, Debra (Roger) Wolf of Fulton, Lori (Mark) Knudsen of Fulton and Lisa (Jim Knudson) Cady of Dixon, IL; one son, Danny (Julie) VanZuiden of Fulton; nine grandchildren, Melissa (Charlie) Crider, Magen (Kyle) Folk, Bradley (Jen Swisher) Kane, Ben (Kayla) Kane, Andrew (Ashley Beyers) Knudsen, Billy (Jacki) Moynihan, Mitch Humphrey, Alexis (Michael) Brekke, Jacob VanZuiden; thirteen great grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret, of Massachusetts; two brothers, a twin, Harvey (Arlene) VanZuiden of Morrison and Ron (Linda) VanZuiden of Erie, IL.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Gen, Grace and Darlene; five brothers, Gerald, Maynard, Jay, Wayne and Willard.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks for the care the hospice team extended to Howard while he was at the U of I Hospital and Clinics.
