Obituary for Gladys L. Balk
GLADYS L. BALK, 80, of Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton, IL died Friday, October 9, 2009 at the nursing home. Gladys was born August 29, 1929 in Fulton, IL to Claus and Grace (Poel) Noordt. She was educated in the Fulton Grade Schools and attended Fulton High School. She married Eugene Balk on February 1, 1949 in Fulton, IL. He died May 29, 1987. Gladys and her husband farmed in Whiteside County for 20 years, moving to Fulton in 1969. She enjoyed being a homemaker and volunteered at Harbor Crest Nursing Home for 5 years. The past 8 years, Gladys was an active resident of Harbor Crest Nursing Home and served as President of the Resident"s Council. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and loved helping people. Gladys was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church in Fulton. Survivors include three daughters, LaVonne (Phil) Huizenga and Kathy Suter both of Fulton; and Debra (Terry) Nelson of Spring Grove, IL; one son, Terry (Donna) Balk of Fulton; seven grandchildren, John (Stacey) Dail, Jason (Christine) Dail, Shannon (Ted) McHugh, P.J. Gluchman, Amanda, Michael, and Steve Balk; nine great grandchildren, A.J. and Ashley Newell; Matt and Ryan Dail; Crystal Huizenga; Isaac, Elijah and Solomon Dail; Autumn Nichole; and one sister, Anna (Marvin) Dykema of Morrison, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene; one granddaughter, Becki Huizenga; one son-in-law, Jesse Suter; one sister, Loretta Huizenga.
