Obituary for Gerald J. Ottens
GERALD J. OTTENS, 96, of 1101 " 15th Avenue, Fulton, IL, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton. Gerald was born August 15, 1915, in Fulton, to Joseph G. and Minnie (Jaarsma) Ottens. He was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools. He married Marian G. Geerts on May 2, 1941, in Fulton. She died February 16, 2009. Gerald was employed by the former Central Steel & Tube Company in Clinton, IA for 39 years. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton and was a past board member of Unity Christian School of Fulton. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, flowers, and telling stories of significant historical events that he remembered and that impacted his, and his family"s, lives. Survivors include one daughter, Carol Massey of Western Springs, IL; one son, Terry (Linda) Ottens of Fulton; five grandchildren, Michael (Virginia) Massey, Elizabeth (Mike) Drevline, Joseph Ottens, Emily Ottens, Thomas Ottens; two great grandchildren, Evan and Madison Dzik, five sisters, Johanna Vegter of Morrison, IL, Luella Buis of Morrison, IL, Jessie Dykema of Morrison, IL, Della Mae (Allen) Deelsnyder of Fulton, IL, and Betty (Donald) Matthews of Indio, CA; one brother, Harvey Ottens of Morrison, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; two sisters, Pauline Ottens and Katherine Bielema; two brothers, LaVerne and David Ottens.
