GERALD J. BOELKENS, 83, of Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton, IL, died Friday, February 15, 2013 at the nursing home. Gerald was born November 21, 1929, in Albany, IL, to Charles & Katie (Zeeryp) Boelkens. He attended Fulton Grade Schools and attended Fulton High School. On June 12, 1951 he married Betty A. Dykstra in Fulton. Gerald served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany from 1951-1953. He worked for General Electric Co. in Morrison, IL for 39 years, retiring in 1988. Gerald was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, where he served as an elder, a deacon and he also ran the sound system. He served on the board at Harbor Crest Nursing Home, was a member of the American Legion and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Fulton Food Pantry. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, truck gardening, woodworking, and was a handyman when anyone needed anything. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Betty; five daughters, Beth (Larry) St. Ores of Fulton, IL, Sue Krueger of Cape Coral, FL, Pam (Arnie) Vogel of Fulton, IL, Norma (Keith) King of Fulton, IL and Lisa (Rod) Whitmore of Albany, IL; one son, Brent Boelkens of Sterling, IL; sixteen grandchildren, Bill (Rebecca) St. Ores, Brenda (Joe) Delmar, Kelly (Jesse) Jacobs, Kari (Chris) Green, Kurt (Tara Hoage) St. Ores, Angie (Chris) Degueldre, Tony (Rodica) Krueger, Adrienne (Josh) Zachritz, Paul (Janie) Vogel, Marla (Jeremy) Wiersema, Andy (Donna) Vogel, Ben (Elise Medenblik) Vogel, Mark (Christine) Shepard, Alex (Kim Weiland) Shepard, Jeff Whitmore, Randy Whitmore; seventeen great-grandchildren with two on the way; one brother, LaVerne (Shirley) Boelkens of Chicago, IL. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marjorie Hartman and Bessie Boelkens in infancy; two brothers, Curtis and Marvin Boelkens.
