Obituary for Evelyn J. Buikema
EVELYN JANE BUIKEMA, 84, of Clinton, IA died peacefully while surrounded by her family on Saturday, December 19, 2015. Evelyn was born August 22, 1931, in Fulton, IL, to Chas and Annie (Wiersema) Meinsma. She was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools and attended Fulton High School in Fulton, IL. She graduated from Morrison High School in Morrison, IL. On December 9, 1955, she married Orville E. Buikema in Fulton. Evelyn was employed by the former Morrison Telephone Company, Burpee Seed Company, and Nielsen Clearing House, both in Clinton. Most of her life was spent as a full-time homemaker. She was a former member of Spring Valley Reformed Church in Fulton, from 1931 to 1964. She then became a member of Community Reformed Church in Clinton, where she volunteered by playing the piano, teaching Sunday school, directing the youth choir and band, serving in the church"s Joy Circle and on the Reformed Church Classis Board. She was an auxiliary member of Gideon"s International and was a former president of the American Field Service (A.F.S.) Intercultural Program. She was also a member of the Double-I Antique Auto Club and the Hawthorne Grade School PTA. Evelyn enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, sewing, and making crafts. She especially enjoyed spending time with family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Joy Buikema (Torgeir)Fj"rtoft of Oslo, Norway, and Jill (Patrick) Montgomery of Bettendorf, IA; two sons, Joey (Jean) Buikema of Clinton, IA, and Jon (Ellen) Buikema of Cedar Rapids, IA; nine grandchildren, Daniel (Sigrun Breivik) Buikema Fj"rtoft, Thomas Buikema Fj"rtoft, Michael Buikema Fj"rtoft, Hattie Buikema, Meggie Buikema, Noah Buikema, Amanda Montgomery, Sarah Montgomery, Hannah Montgomery; three great-grandchildren, Tora Evelin Fj"rtoft, Ellisiv Gunne Fj"rtoft, Sivert Johannes Fj"rtoft; one brother, Wilbur Meinsma of Clinton, IA. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Tiesman and Mary Ann Engelkens; two brothers, John Meinsma and Henry Meinsma.
