Obituary for Esther L. Hamstra
ESTHER L. HAMSTRA, 77, of Resthave Home in Morrison, IL, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at the nursing home. Esther was born May 3, 1936, in Morrison, IL, to Renzie J. and Iva (Tichler) Buikema. She was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools and was a graduate of Lyndon High School, Lyndon, IL. She married Donald G. Van Zuiden on March 30, 1956 in Morrison. He died December 14, 1973. She later married Gerald L. Hamstra on October 4, 1974 in Morrison. Esther was first employed by the former Volckmann"s Furniture Factory in Morrison. She then was a self-employed cake decorator and also worked as a school bus driver for R.C. Smith Transportation in Morrison for 20 years. Later, Esther, along with her husband, owned and operated Hamstra Carpet Cleaning for 25 years. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, where she was active in the church"s Ladies Aid and Philathea Societies. Esther also served as a prayer partner and catechism teacher. She enjoyed camping, traveling, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Gerald; two daughters, Debra Van Zuiden of Morrison and Deane (Mike) Patten of Morrison; two sons, Gary (Monica) Van Zuiden of Dunlap, IL and Rodney (Deann) Van Zuiden of Morrison; one step-daughter, Marsha Hamstra of East Moline, IL; four step-sons, Kevin (Barb) Hamstra of Prophetstown, IL, Gregg (Tammy) Hamstra of Prophetstown, IL, Brad Hamstra of Morrison, IL, and Arlyn (Lisa) Hamstra of Prophetstown, IL, twenty-four grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janice (Tom) Patten of Morrison, Shirley (Doug) Borop of Machesney Park, IL, Beth (Steve) Wroble of Morrison; one brother, Allen (Hope) Buikema of Morrison, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Donald; one daughter, in infancy.
