Obituary for Esther L. (Garman) Davis
ESTHER L. (GARMAN) DAVIS, 101, of Prophets Riverview Good Samaritan Center in Prophetstown, IL, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the center. Esther was born December 7, 1911, in Lanark, IL, to Robert and Bertha (Shafer) Garman. She graduated from Polo High School in Polo, IL and also from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. She did graduate study at Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL. On December 23, 1943, she married Joe M. Davis in Brookville, IL. He died May 27, 1985. Esther taught school in various Illinois cities, and Evansville, WI, where she trained student teachers for the University of Wisconsin. Esther educated young children for 47 years. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown, IL. She was a member of the National Education Association (NEA), and the Illinois Education Association (IEA). She belonged to the Whiteside County Retired Teachers Association. Esther was an original bond holder and proud member of the Prophet Hills Country Club. She enjoyed spending time with her life-long friends, including the Bridge card club, and Pinochle groups. She was also an avid Chicago Cubs Fan. Survivors include one daughter, Joetta (Gary) Camp of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Melissa and Scott Camp; two great grandchildren, Merrick and Phoenix Gilstrap; one step son, Jeffrey (Lana) Davis and family of Rockford, IL; one step grandson, Lee (Nancy) Wagner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; one step daughter, Marilyn Wagner.
