Obituary for Edwin J. Wiersema
EDWIN J. WIERSEMA, 86, of Harbor Crest Nursing Home, Fulton, IL, died Friday, August 19, 2011 at the nursing home. Edwin was born May 19, 1925, in Garden Plain Township, IL, to John H. "Jack" and Katherine (Haan) Wiersema. He was educated in the Otter Bluff School of rural Whiteside County. He married Shirley J. Shipma on February 22, 1947, in Fulton. She died October 28, 2007. Edwin farmed in the Fulton area all of his adult life, and also worked at Quality Ready Mix for 22 years. After his retirement, he worked part-time for Tiesman Excavating. He was a member of Gateway Faith Fellowship in Fulton and also a member of the Whiteside County Farm Bureau, the National Cattle Feeders Association and the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He enjoyed gardening and traveling with his wife, and was an avid bowler, bowling on the Tuesday Night Men"s League for 25 years. Edwin also collected and restored antique John Deere 730 tractors. Survivors include three daughters, Sharon (Norman) Criss, Susan (Kenneth) Hartman and Pamela (Leslie) Huisingh, all of Fulton; one son, Wayne (Mary)Wiersema, of Fulton; nine grandchildren, Rich (Lynelle) Criss, David (Katie) Criss, James (Jane) Criss, Staci (Andy) Bentley, Troy Hartman, Melissa (Brandon) Varner, Jeremy (Marla) Wiersema, Cathy (Beau) Eversoll, Amanda (Terry) Boonstra; thirteen great grandchildren; three sisters, Katherine Smith and Delores (Don) Goodridge, both of Fulton and Patsy (Gary) Bechtel of Morrison, IL; four brothers, John (Bea) Wiersema and Kenneth Wiersema, both of Fulton, Vernon (Donna) Wiersema of Houston, TX and Steven (Gloria) Wiersema of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; two grandchildren, Lisa Criss and Elisha Wiersema; three brothers, Henry, Thomas and Donald Wiersema.
