Obituary for Edward "Wayne" Meurs

EDWARD “WAYNE” MEURS, 85, of Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, IL, formerly of Fulton, IL, died Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Big Meadows.


Cremations rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, officiated by Mr. Ken Renkes. There will be no visitation; the interment at Fulton Township Cemetery will be private. A memorial has been established for the Fulton Food Pantry. The family would like to extend their thanks to MercyOne Hospice and all the staff at Big Meadows in Savanna for their wonderful care given to their father.


Wayne was born August 18, 1939 in Ocheyedan, IA to Edward and Lena (Post) Meurs. He attended Fulton Christian School, and was a 1957 graduate of Fulton High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force. On August 2, 1963 he married Carol Ann Bielema in Fulton. She passed away on July 4, 2022. Wayne worked for the Fulton Journal during high school and following his military service. He then worked at G.E. in Morrison, IL for 37 years, retiring in 1999. After retirement he spent his time working for the Fulton Country Club, and also as an EMT for the Fulton Fire District. He was a charter member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton. He enjoyed golf, and was also a charter member of the Fulton Country Club. Wayne coached several sports, including Fulton Jr. Tackle. He was also a member of the “Chain Gang”. He enjoyed the great outdoors and was an avid hunter in his early years. Wayne also enjoyed bowling and participated in slow-pitch softball.


Survivors include a daughter, Nicole Meurs of Clinton, IA; a son, Matthew (Carolyn) Meurs of Fulton; four grandchildren, Amaya and John Carter; Halle and Andrew Meurs; three sisters, Nancy (Ron) Shear, Lois Vogel and Betty (Harlan) Wiebenga, all of Fulton.


Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol; two sons, Greg Alan Meurs in infancy and Rodger Lee Meurs; one brother in infancy, Gary Lee Meurs; a brother-in-law, Ron Vogel.
