Obituary for E. Donald Huizenga
E. DONALD "DON" HUIZENGA, 93, of Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock, IL, formerly of Fulton, IL, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at Hearthstone Manor. Don was born September 15, 1915, in Lyndon, IL, to Earl and Mary (Hussong) Huizenga. He was educated in the Erie grade schools in Erie, IL and graduated from Erie Community High School in 1933. He married Arlene M. Lovgren on November 3, 1940 in Princeton, IL. She died January 10, 1992. Don entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II as a tank commander with the Second Armored Division. He served as part of the Honor Guard during the meeting of the Big Three at Potsdam, Germany. He was first employed as an electroplater at Lawrence Brothers Manufacturing in Sterling, IL. Later he co-owned the Fulton Locker Service for 14 years. He then owned and operated, along with his wife, Jahn"s Home Furnishings for 24 years, retiring in 1984. Don was active in community service. He served as president of the Fulton Lions Club, Fulton Kiwanis Club, and the Fulton Country Club. He also served as both an alderman and mayor of the City of Fulton, from 1953 " 1961, during which time he helped to bring both Drives, Inc. and natural gas service to the city. He organized the Fulton Community Fund and established and organized the Fulton Fire Protection District. Don was an avid golfer and bowler, acquiring over 50 bowling trophies. He was also a member of the Second Reformed Church in Fulton. Survivors include one son, Craig (Karen) Huizenga of Woodstock, IL; two grandsons, Paul Richard and Grant Logan Huizenga; four sisters, Edna (Wayne) Sikkema of Fulton, IL, Marie (George) Pelletier of Erie, IL, Grace (Marvin) DeWeerdt of Sun City, AZ and Kay (John "Jack") Hamilton of Fulton, IL. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul Huizenga, two sisters, Shirley Huizenga, in infancy, and Joyce Temple; one brother, Johnnie Huizenga.
