Obituary for Dorothy E. Wierenga
DOROTHY E. WIERENGA, 86, of 413 - 12th Street, Silvis, IL, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007 in her home. Dorothy was born May 20, 1921, in Fenton, IL, to John C. and Etta Marie (Gerdes) Pilgrim. She was educated in the Lyndon Grade School and graduated from Lyndon High School in Lyndon, IL. She received three years of nurses training in Freeport, IL and graduated as a registered nurse. She married Edward Wierenga on October 15, 1946 in Sterling, IL. He died December 5, 2000. Dorothy was employed as a registered nurse for many years in several area hospitals, including her position as head nurse of labor and delivery at Illini Hospital in Silvis, IL, retiring in 1981. She also taught prenatal classes. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Moline, IL. She was listed in "Who"s Who of Women in America" in 1978. She was also a contributing author of a nursing textbook. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley J. Otts of Silvis, IL; one son, Dale E. (Judy) Wierenga of Poolesville, MD; four grandchildren, Louis J. (Alanna) Wierenga, Anna Wierenga, Jacquelyn Wynes, and Chad Wynes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; one brother, Donald Pilgrim.
