Obituary for Donald H. Van Ormer
DONALD H. VAN ORMER, 94, of 501 Jenkran, Morrison, IL, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, CA. Don was born December 28, 1911 in Huntsville, IL to Charles D. and Myrtle M. (Pierce) Van Ormer. He was educated in Huntsville, IL grade schools and was a 1930 graduate of Rushville High School. He received his Bachelor of Education from Western IL State Teacher"s College, his Master of Education from the University of IL and he did advanced degree work at the University of Colorado. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Don married Mary A. Roberts on December 25, 1936 in Augusta, IL. She died June 20, 1987. He moved to Morrison in 1959 to serve as principal of Morrison Community High School, a position he held until his retirement in 1972. Prior to that time, he had been a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent in the communities of Forrest, Leland, Varna, Camden, and Hull all in IL. Following retirement, he served as a part time recruiter for the Morrison Institute of Technology. Don was a member and past Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the Illinois High School Association. He was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church, Morrison Rotary Club, Morrison Dunlap Lodge #321 AF & AM, Valley of Moline, IL Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and the American Legion- Morrison Post #328. Survivors include a daughter, Diana L. Van Ormer of San Diego, CA; a son, Donald E. (Gail) Van Ormer of Marion, IL; two grandchildren, Tyler Van Ormer and Allison (Mrs. Shawn) Spence; two great grandchildren, Braxton and Sophia Spence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; a sister, Charlotte Cleveland and a brother, Millard W. Van Ormer.
