Obituary for Darrel "Doc" Sampson
DARREL “DOC” SAMPSON, 79, of Prophetstown, IL, died Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, IL.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 PM Friday, August 16, 2019 at the First Lutheran Church in Prophetstown. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 17th, at the First Lutheran Church, with Rev. Susan Davenport officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral service. Interment will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. Memorials to the First Lutheran Church of Prophetstown and the Prophetstown Ambulance and Fire Department have been established.
Darrel was born on March 1, 1940 in Hartley, IA to Daniel and Margaret (Kramme) Sampson. He was a graduate of Hartley High School and went on to receive a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. He married Glenda R. Philiph on May 28, 1960 in May City, IA. Darrel worked as a veterinarian in Prophetstown until his retirement in 2004. He joined the Prophetstown Fire Department when he first moved to town. He was a member of the Lions Club and Prophet Hills Country Club, served on the City Council, the Rock River Board and also the First Lutheran Church Council. Darrel coached Little League Baseball and he was a member of the athletic booster club.
Survivors include his wife, Glenda; one daughter, Deb Scheidegger of Lake Carroll, IL; two sons, Bryan (Sue) Sampson of Bettendorf, IA and Darwin (Annemarie) Sampson of Libertyville, IL; twelve grandchildren, Samantha (John) Adamczyk, Kristin (Kyle) Ullmark, Molly (Brandon Doe) Scheidegger, Raena (Lucas) Nerhus, Jimmy Sampson, Michael Sampson, Talia Sampson, Daniel Ryan, Max Sampson, Mack Ryan, Casey Ryan, Georgia Sampson; five great grandchildren, Eliana, Michael, Lucas, Graham and Harrison; four sisters, June Luedke, Frances (Bob) Olesen, Judy (Dennis) Schumacher, Betty (Jerry) Dawson; four brothers, Garry (Darlene) Sampson, George (Margaret) Sampson, Earl (June) Sampson, and Lynnwood (Donna) Sampson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Doug Sampson; one son-in-law, Bruce Scheidegger.
