Obituary for Bruce M. Van Kooten
BRUCE M. VAN KOOTEN, 84, of 408 E. Park Street, Morrison, IL, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Morrison, IL. Bruce was born February 15, 1927 in Prairie View, KS to Edward and Margaret (Woltman) Van Kooten. He was educated in the Prairie View, KS grade schools and was a 1944 graduate of Morrison High School in Morrison, IL. Bruce was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He married Coretta C. Bielema on February 17, 1950 in Fulton, IL. Bruce was co-owner of Bernhardy"s Garage in Morrison and then was employed as an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Morrison Christian Reformed Church and served as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, and Superintendent. He also served as a member of the Unity Christian School Board. Bruce was a collector of antique and classic cars and enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Arizona. Survivors include his wife, Coretta; two daughters, Sara (Dave) Vanderkleed of Lafayette, IN and Melinda (Rod) Damhoff of Morrison, IL; one son, Monte Van Kooten of Sterling, IL; one son-in-law, Darrell Busch of Yorkville, IL; one daughter-in-law, Karen Van Kooten-Oostenryk of Morrison, IL; fifteen grandchildren, Dayne (Erica) Bush, Travis (Aimee) Busch, Andy (Brittany) Busch, Katie (Trent) Shumway, Zeb Van Kooten, Noah Van Kooten, Jacie Van Kooten, Jack Van Kooten, Lucas Vanderkleed, Anna Vanderkleed, Rachel (Matthew) Beck, Jessie Vanderkleed, Ben Damhoff, Tony Damhoff, and Isaac Damhoff; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Anema of Grand Junction, CO and Agnes Bernhardy of Albuquerque, NM; one brother, Paul (Charlene) Van Kooten of Grand Rapids, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother; one daughter, Cindy Busch; one son, Rod Van Kooten, and one sister, Bernice Rus.
