Obituary for Betty J. Merema
BETTY J. MEREMA, 89, of Fulton, IL, died Thursday, November 23, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton, IA, surrounded by her family.Betty was born July 27, 1928 in Fulton, to John and Dena (Sikkema) DeWeerdt. She was educated in the Fulton Grade School and was a 1947 graduate of Fulton High School. She married Edwin G. Merema on February 15, 1951 in Fulton. He died April 30, 2011. Betty was a beautician in East Moline, IL and then worked at General Electric in Morrison, IL, until 1954.After that she engaged in farming along with her husband, Edwin, in the rural Fulton area until retiring into town in 1990.They provided a loving home to their children, Ron and Pam and to Betty's younger brother, Gene and to cherished nephews, Mike, Billy, and Craig Belk. Betty was a member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed cooking, baking and housekeeping, where she kept everything exceptionally neat and tidy.
Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Merema of Chicago and Fulton, IL; a son, Ronald (Linda) Merema of Fulton, IL; three grandchildren, Jeffrey (Karen) Merema, Michael (Amanda) Merema and Katie (Eric ) Roquet; eight great grandchildren; four sisters, Beverly (Harold) Bonneur of Fulton, Mrs. Arlene Dykema of Fulton, Irma Swanson of Fulton and Judy Dykstra of Waupun, WI; four brothers, Robert (Carol) DeWeerdt of Georgetown, TX, and Leon (Elsie) DeWeerdt, Larry DeWeerdt, Gene (Diane) DeWeerdt, all of Mesa, AZ.She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; two sisters, Eunice Norman and Lois DeWeerdt; six brothers, Arthur, Vernon, Marvin, Arnold, James and Russell DeWeerdt.
FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 AM Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.
