Obituary for Betty J. Balk
BETTY J. BALK, 70, of 801 Lucas Avenue, Thomson, IL died Friday, January 27, 2012 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. Betty was born December 16, 1941 in Fulton, IL to Leonard and Etta (Valk) Feldt. She was educated in the Thomson Grade Schools and graduated in 1960 from York Community High School in Thomson, IL. Betty married Edwin P. Balk on June 16, 1961 in Fulton, IL. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in owning and operating Balk Trucking in Thomson. Betty was a member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton where she sang with the "Sunbeams", singing at the local nursing homes. She enjoyed gardening and participating in the walks for the "Race for the Cure" and many other walks. She also enjoyed helping at her son and daughter-in-law"s bakery, Jaarsma Bakery, in Pella, IA. Survivors include her husband, Edwin; one daughter, Donna (Michael) Mangler of Savanna, IL; four sons, David (Kristi) Balk of Pella, IA, Jeff Balk of Thomson, Jim (Tammy) Balk of Thomson, Brian (Beth) Balk of Thomson; ten grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one step great grandson; one sister, Doris Rosenbalm of Oregon, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Kenneth Jay Feldt in infancy.
