Obituary for Bernice L. Byland
BERNICE L. BYLAND, 84, of West Meade Place, Nashville, TN, died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at the nursing home. Bernice was born March 4, 1925, in Spring Valley, IL, to Joe J. and Helen B. (Vander Vinne) Bielema. She was a graduate of Morrison High School. She married Theodore Byland in Union Grove, IL. During WWII she was employed as a secretary to the President of Southwestern College (now Rhodes College) in Memphis, TN. Later she worked as a realtor in Cleveland, OH. While living in Muskegon, MI, she worked as a medical receptionist. Upon her return to Cleveland, OH, she was employed as an executive secretary for the chief of surgery at a large Cleveland hospital. In Grand Rapids, MI she managed a private medical practice in the 1980"s. She subsequently worked for the chief of medicine at the same hospital in Cleveland. In 1991, following her retirement, she moved to Nashville, TN. Bernice was an active volunteer in the various churches where her former husband served as pastor. After retirement, she was a member of the East Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Brentwood, TN. Bernice enjoyed family, reading, writing letters and traveling. Survivors include three sons, Jody (Peggy) Byland of Fremont, MI, Dr. Jeffrey (Elaine) Byland of Fremont, MI and Dr. James (Mary) Byland of Brentwood, TN; eight grandchildren, Dr. Mark (Jennifer) Byland, Ellen (Joe) Zupanic, Ann (Ryan) Knudsen, Shawn Byland, Kristine Roughton, Hannah, Audrey and Emma Byland; eight great grandchildren, Rhiannon Pafford and Erika Roughton; Caleb and Luke Byland; Megan, Laura and Ryan Zupancic; Ella Knudsen; one sister, Arlene (Bernie) Merema of Morrison, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Raymond Bielema.
