Obituary for Alvin D. "AL" Shawver
ALVIN D. “AL” SHAWVER, 95, of 2006 Terrace Lane, Morrison, IL, died Sunday, March 17, 2019 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL.
Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be a memorial visitation at 10 AM Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the Morrison Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Dr. Michael Selburg officiating. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements. Interment will be in the Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.
Al was born October 13, 1923, in Kansas City, MO. His parents were Harvey L. and Illafay (Horning) Shawver. Al was educated in the Morrison grade schools and graduated from Morrison High School. On March 12, 1948 he married Winnifred D. “Cookee” Onken in Morrison. Al was a veteran and served in the U.S. Navy as a Yeoman 2nd Class during WWII. He was honored Memorial Day 2018 as the oldest surviving veteran in Morrison. In 1955 Al, along with his parents and Bob Kingery, purchased the Whiteside Sentinel and merged it with the Whiteside County News to form the News Sentinel Publication. Al was a member and past president of the Morrison Lions Club and also a member of the Rotary Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Morrison. Al was an avid tennis player and golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Cookee, of Morrison; two daughters, Darcy (John) Houseman of Morrison and Robin Vande Zande of Kent, OH; five grandchildren, Scott Houseman, Leigh (Mitch) Milnes, Lauren (Jeff) Warnock, Evan (Ryan) Deady and David Vande Zande; six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one great grandchild, Kevin Houseman.
