Obituary for Albertus Bert Ritzema
ALBERTUS "BERT" RITZEMA, 84, of 1617 8th St., Fulton, IL, died Monday, February 6, 2006 at Genesis Medical Center East in Davenport, IA. Bert was born June 1, 1921 in Middelstum, Netherlands, Holland, to Freerk and Grietje (Rozema) Ritzema. All his education took place in the Netherlands and included Christian grade school, high school for 2 years, and 4 years of trade school learning to be a book binder. He married Patricia "Patty" Land on October 18, 1945 in Groningen, Netherlands. Bert was first employed as a professional bookbinder in Holland. After immigrating to the United States, he was employed in construction for 20 years. He then served as Superintendent of Maintenance of the YMCA in Clinton, IA for 9 years. He also owned and operated, along with his wife, Patty, the former Tasty Mates Drive-In Restaurant in Fulton, IL. Bert was a charter member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton where he served as an elder and as a counselor for the Cadets program. He also was a member of the church"s men"s society. Bert and Patty were instrumental in helping to organize the first Dutch Days Festival. Bert was a festival volunteer for many years until failing health no longer permitted him to be involved. Faith, family, and friends were his focus and joy. Survivors include his wife, Patty; one daughter, Trudy (Mrs. Ken) Klaver of Le Mars, IA; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Rose Ritzema of Chattanooga, TN; four sons, Dick J. (Lois) Ritzema of Albany, IL; Rev. Jake (Priscilla) Ritzema of German Valley, IL; Bill Ritzema of Niagara Falls, Canada; Ed (Diane) Ritzema of Posen, IL; twenty-one grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; four sisters, Derktje (Mrs. Lambertus) Klaveringa of Groningen, Holland; Mrs. Tjaaktje Hartenhoff of Canada; Jo (Mrs. Jan) Land of Groningen, Holland and Mrs. Riek Tuuk of Groningen, Holland; and one brother, Dick (Edith) Ritzema of Waupun, WI. He was preceded in death by a son, Fred; a grandson, Jamie Klaver; two sisters, Grietje Wals and Jantje Mensinga; and one brother, Jacob Ritzema.
