Obituary for William L. "Bill" Schaver
WILLIAM L. “BILL” SCHAVER, 92, of Harbor Crest Home, Fulton, IL, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the home.

The funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, April 23, 2018, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the funeral home. Co-officiating will be Rev. Edie Lenz, pastor of First Reformed Church in Fulton and Rev. Shannon Parrish, pastor of Newton Zion Reformed Church in rural Erie, IL. Interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton, IL. Memorials have been established to Harbor Crest Home and Unity Christian Schools.

Bill was born March 21, 1926, in Fulton, IL, to Gabriel and Bertha (Wiebenga) Schaver. He was educated in the Fulton Christian Grade School and was a 1943 graduate of Fulton High School. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 6, 1944 and was honorably discharged on July 12, 1946. He served aboard the USS Waters APD #8 and the USS DeHaven. He saw action in the South Pacific at the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was proud to see the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima and to have served his country. Bill married Betty H. Temple on June 10, 1949, in Fulton. He worked at Curtis Woodwork in Clinton, IA, until it closed. Bill and Betty then moved to the country and farmed until moving back to Fulton in 1969. Bill worked for the Fulton Elevator and later for Howard’s Feed and Coal, retiring in 1990. He was a former member of the Newton Zion Reformed Church, where he served as elder and deacon and was a current member of First Christian Reformed Church in Fulton. Bill enjoyed bowling, going on bus trips, and gospel music. He was very proud of his entire family.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Betty; two daughters, Diane (Pat) Barrett of Clinton, IA and Brenda (Dave) Sheckler of Fulton, IL; one son, Steve “Sid” (Kelly) Schaver of Albany, IL; five grandchildren, Amanda Schaver, Miranda (Eric Burden) Schaver, Emily (Brian) Strunk, Nikki (Jason) Frett and Kara (Travis) Ricklefs; four step grandchildren, Dannika Dawson, Andy Barrett, Ben (Rosemarie) Barrett, and Emily (Shane) Carlson; eight great-grandchildren, Cade, Kinnick, Brynlee, Moxie, Robby, Riley, Emma, and Abby; eight step great-grandchildren, Vanian, Dakota, Christine, Kevin, Alix, Odin, Christine, and Nicholas; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Kloet of Kenosha, WI and Gloria (Bud) Peska of Sterling, IL; and one brother, Harold (Judi) Schaver of Fulton, IL.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Schaver and one brother, Clayton Schaver.
